ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR DISABILTY SUPPORT SERVICES

OVERVIEW:
Coordinate support services and reasonable academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Help ensure academic access and successful academic development of students with disabilities from matriculation to graduation.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Coordinate services to students with disabilities. Review student documentation, approve/determine reasonable accommodations. Coordinate provision of accommodations with students and faculty/staff (e.g., extended time/alternate setting examinations, note taking services, reading and text-to-tape services, etc.). Provide individualized and group academic support to students (e.g. learning styles training, academic mentoring, time management training, study skills training, etc.) and/or provide appropriate referrals for these services. Serve as liaison with Recordings for the Blind & Dyslexic, TechAccess, etc. regarding curriculum materials and assistive technology. Work collaboratively with the Coordinator of Services for Students with Physical Disabilities to help provide for the non-academic needs of students with disabilities.
2. Liaison with on-campus/off-campus units/staff. Spend considerable time working with faculty and faculty advisors to ensure and/or coordinate reasonable academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities. Serve as member of 504/ADA Advisory Committee and liaison to 504/ADA Compliance Officer. Collaborate with academic departments/programs, Office of the Dean of Undergraduate Studies, Office of Academic Scheduling/Registration, Health Services, Residence Life, Office of Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership (SAIL), Athletics, psychologists, psychiatrists, medical doctors, etc. to provide necessary and appropriate accommodations/services to students with disabilities. Consult with Office of Admission to review prospective student applications and to coordinate prospective student visits (re: students with disabilities and their families). Educate the campus community on applicable laws, reasonable accommodations, and effective strategies in working with students with disabilities (e.g., develop manuals, offer workshops).
3. Participate in Summer Orientation Programming. Work with the Office of Student Activities, Involvement, and Leadership (SAIL) to facilitate individual and/or group meetings with incoming students with special needs and their parents/guardians. At orientation meetings, accurately present academic demands, programs of study, registration assistance, and OAS services.
4. Organize staff responsibilities (i.e., graduate assistant, OAS staff support, student work support), supervise and coordinate staff. Help prepare faculty notification letters. Help coordinate pre-registration activities for students with disabilities. Prepare reports and memorandum. Prepare recommendations and evaluations for students as requested.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Master's Degree in special education, education, or related field required. Minimum three years directly related professional experience in the post secondary environment, working directly with students with disabilities preferred; similar experience with students outside the post-secondary setting may be considered and/or a combination of training and experience. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, counseling, and listening skills. Knowledge of learning styles, strategies, and techniques, especially related to students with learning disabilities. Knowledge of assistive technology and its application in the post-secondary setting. Ability to read and interpret neurological and/or psychological evaluations. Technical skills, including the ability to use computer software (e.g. campus administrative system, word processing, spreadsheet, database, etc.) to enhance effectiveness. Knowledge of federal disability law.
